Music with heart. On Earth Day, April 22, 2009, while in Thailand, I attended Celebrate Earth, a tribute to our planet, nature, and the environment. It was much more than a concert. Music and art combined, with stunning visuals, modern dance, and informative presentations, with Mother Nature as the connection. The art display of from nearly one hundred students welcomed us into the theatre. From the first note by Ruamrudee’s choir group, the Jeremiah Singers, our senses were awakened. KAYA Green Band then sent a powerful acoustic message about educating future generations with their original hit, “Alamin”. A middle school dance troupe showed their talent with an interpretive dance about what humans have done to Earth. Then there was a history of Earth Day, which helped many of us to understand how this all started. Crush 44, a rising young Bangkok group rocked the house and came back at the end of the show to join KAYA Green Band for a few songs. Michael Rassinger from the Thai Swiss school amazed everyone on keyboards and synthesizer, playing along with beautiful oceanic films. There was always some kind of artistic visual media going while the musicians performed. I found myself thinking how long it has been since I have heard music with meaningful lyrics, rhythmic wonder, and entertainers singing from their hearts. KAYA Green Band is in tune to our world we now live in. One of the Redemptorist priests, Father Travis, said it best, “that we have all been inspired by life’s wonders and now it was time to remember, give back, and connect as one”. Celebrate Earth left me with that feeling. Reverend M. C. Bennett
KAYA Green Band got its name from the word “kaya”. Kaya is a word with many meanings. In Tagalog it translates as ”we can”. In Pali, the ancient language spoken during the lifetime of Sidharta Gotama (Buddha), it meant ”body”. It’s also the name of a song and album title from Bob Marley. Most appealingly, in the ancient Filipino language (Alibatha), it means “susi ng kapatiran” or “key to brother/sisterhood”. It’s meaning is as diverse as the members of the band. All band members are united in their love for Mother Earth and caring for our planet.
